Nesting Dolls

Lately my dreams act as
Chronicles of a secondary life.
In daylight we wander. Then
Under setting suns our tongues
Withdraw into their caves
And our bodies lean in
To support one another
In times of need.
As we sleep entwined
Looking like Hindu goddesses
All arms and legs holding icons
Of sentiment in the struggle
For wisdom I carry on.
In dreams we whisper
That time moves slowly.
I am incorporated.
You follow me into restaurants
Cities where I don’t know my name
And bear witness.
I follow you to the arctic
Where we sleep in tents
And your friends embrace me
With a warmth that emanates.
I sleep in dreams and wake up
In life accomplished.
Each day accumulated is finite
But on these nights I’m gifted
With a life within a life
Within a life.
